Loneliness Awareness Week
Today marks the start of Loneliness Awareness Week, started three years ago by Marmalade Trust to change the way we think and acknowledge loneliness.
Loneliness can affect anyone, at any age. This awareness week aims to help reduce the stigma concerning loneliness and encourage people to openly have a conversation about it.
At SPCK we have a few books on the subject on loneliness. One of which is Solitude by Terry Waite. In this thoughtful and engaging book Terry Waite reflects on his personal experience of isolation whilst spending five years in solitary confinement. After his time in solitary confinement he discovered that he was drawn to find out more about the power of solitude in the lives of other people. Throughout this book he recalls his encounters with people who have experienced some very different ways of being solitary, among them the peaceful solitude of remote and beautiful places.
It is not only adults who can experience loneliness but also children. In David and the Lonely Prince children will be reminded that it can be a challenge for some children to make friends. This book will encourage children to read between the lines of what the Bible tells us about David’s early years. The light-hearted and beautifully illustrated pictures will delight parents and children alike.
Personal encounters of loneliness, anxiety, doubt and fear can be read in Fearfully Made: Positively Shaping Society. Attacking each of these fears in turn, Hillsong Youth x Young Adults London along with LA, NYC, Sydney, Paris and many more, unite to share real-life stories encouraging youth the world over to better understand how the Fear of God has the power to conquer all other fears.
