Remembering Jean Vanier, 1928-2019
On the passing of Jean Vanier this morning, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends at L’Arche and around the world.
Our association with Jean goes back almost 20 years to the publication of Seeing Beyond Depression, a small volume that had a huge impact, so warmly sympathetic is it to the fragility and vulnerability of the human heart. In 2013, we published a new edition of The Heart of L’Arche, the story of the international movement founded by Jean in France in 1964 of which he says, ‘L’Arche has been for me a school of love.’ Life’s Great Questions followed in 2015, a bold work which encourages us to explore faith and spirituality to find our own answers to the challenges we're facing. And in Jean’s 90th year, came the visionary We Need One Another of which he writes, ‘May this little book help each one of us become messengers of peace, of mercy, and of forgiveness’.
EDITORIAL UPDATE: Following the L'Arche International inquiry into historic sexual abuse by Jean Vanier, please see SPCK's statement here.
